With the World Juniors now on the horizon and the rest of junior hockey in North America getting underway in the New Year, the UFHL scouts have provided their preliminary rankings for the 2021 NHL Draft.
Those rankings, submitted by five scouts and agencies, were combined to produce a consensus that will be applied to the algorithm for the UFHL Entry Auction. That algorithm will ultimately be determined by the top 64 prospects selected in the 2021 NHL Draft — the first- and second-rounders — but these rankings will provide periodical updates (perhaps monthly) to help UFHL franchises prepare for that event with projected minimum bids for each draft spot and starting prices for the prospects picked there.
That is the fantasy element, but scouting for the UFHL is no different than scouting for the NHL. The goal is to identify — and to own — the best prospects. The top 64 from each draft class promise to be the most profitable for scouts through that auction process.
For algorithm purposes, UFHL scouts only ranked their top 64 prospects, though some tacked on honourable mentions for a top 75. Here are the consensus rankings, with a total of 105 prospects cracking the top 75 for those five scouts and agencies, followed by prospect breakdowns and my final thoughts as well as my personal rankings.

It’s no secret that 2021 is the year of the defenceman, so it should come as no surprise that these UFHL scouts all have a defender at No. 1 — three favouring Owen Power and two preferring Brandt Clarke.
In fact, the top three prospects, according to this consensus, and five of the top seven are all defencemen. Those five, including Carson Lambos, Simon Edvinsson and Luke Hughes, are solid bets to be top-10 selections as of today.
It is shaping up to be a strong year for Sweden and Michigan as well. In addition to Edvinsson, Swedish forwards Fabian Lysell and William Eklund and goaltender Jesper Wallstedt are also top-10 candidates. Wallstedt has a chance to go higher than Russian Yaroslav Askarov (11th in 2020) and American Spencer Knight (13th in 2019), with the top 15 being wide open for 2021.
In addition to Power, Michigan has a pair of forwards, Kent Johnson and Matty Beniers, who are projected for the top 10 with the potential to challenge for first overall. Michigan is boasting the best freshman class in NCAA history with the likelihood of having three top-10 picks from the same program.

Some see 2021 as a weaker draft class — due in part to that uncertainty at the top, with no surefire No. 1 prospect and Aatu Raty tailing off in the early stages — and they have a tough act to follow considering how stacked 2019 and 2020 are proving to be and how promising 2022 and 2023 appear to be. Looking back on this five-year stretch a decade from now, it is quite likely that 2021 will look inferior by comparison. Perhaps comparable to 2012, which was also heavy on defencemen in the top 10 but didn’t deliver a true gamebreaker from the first round. The best player from that draft class might be the netminder, Andrei Vasilevskiy, who went 19th. Wallstedt could be the same for this class.
Of the 105 prospects ranked by UFHL scouts, 104 of them are already owned on the platform — Russian forward Vladimir Sychyov is the lone exception and he’ll likely be snatched up by a scout after seeing that here.
Interestingly, 24 of those 105 prospects were added from the Open Market, with Jack O’Brien being the highest at 40th overall in the consensus rankings. He finished last season centering top-15 pick Seth Jarvis with WHL Portland and they should be a dynamic duo whenever that league gets going again.
The other 81 were purchased from the Futures Auction that featured a total of 95 prospects eligible for 2021 — meaning 14 of those 95 didn’t make the top 75 for these preliminary rankings. The Open Market is where the true scouting takes place and those prospects could produce the biggest profit margins.
Breaking these rankings down by ownership, Rubyiss Scouting Agency had the highest total, with 20 of the 105, but Spitfire Scouting had the most first-rounders with 10 in the top 32 and 16 overall. Rubyiss was the runner-up for first-rounders, with eight. As for the rest, Pipeline Prospects owned 14 followed by Dultak Scouting Service, with 12, while High Level Scouting Agency and Prestige Worldwide tied for fifth most, with nine. Dultak and High Level both owned four first-rounders, Pipeline had three and Prestige had two. Alpine Prospects rounded out the first round, with one.
Alpine only had two total, while Horse Lake Scouting had six outside the first round and the following three had five each: Ice Vikings affiliated scout Dave Drinkwalter, Californication Analytics & Scouting and Easton’s Scouting Solutions. Swamp Scouting accounted for the other prospect among those 105.
